The mission of the Music Ministry is to deepen the worship experience, to educate, and to inspire participation that opens people to the transcendent power of the Eternal, both in church and in the larger community.
Our church supports excellent music and liturgy that is meant to uplift those who worship. Music has a significant role to play in the spiritual life of our community. It has the power to uplift, to teach, to unite, and is an integral part of inspiring worship.
Although one can worship anywhere (and without music), worship without music does not easily soar. St. Augustine said, “those who sing pray twice.”
We pray that, wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you will be uplifted, inspired, and sustained by the Ministry of Music of Binkley Church, and that your song will find voice in this house of prayer.
Chancel Choir
Chancel Choir consists of adult singers, college age or older, forming the backbone of the church’s music program. Many have musical backgrounds, and all exhibit a deep commitment to the ministry of music and worship in this church. Extensive musical training is not a prerequisite. If you can hear and hit a pitch, you can sing at Binkley Baptist Church. Because of the extensive amount of material covered in a reasonably brief rehearsal time, the ability to read music is helpful, though not required. Chancel Choir rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9:00 pm.
Our church is fortunate to offer a Choral Scholar Program, which pays a scholarship to local university students who sing with our Chancel Choir. This program not only benefits the music ministry and our worship experiences but helps to make connections in our local community. Learn more about the Choral Scholar program by contacting Minister of Music, Sally Molyneux.
Music for Children & Youth
Preschool and elementary students have the opportunity to sing and make music during Sunday School and Worship with Children. They learn songs to share for worship, as well as important musical skills, through games and lessons. These young singers participate in leading worship occasionally throughout the year.
The Binkley Youth possess a wide range of impressive musical abilities, and we welcome those gifts being shared in worship. Students have opportunities to play and sing for worship throughout the year, including as soloists and in small group settings.
Binkley Bells
Binkley Bells is a group of ringers that plays for worship services throughout the year. A commitment to weekly rehearsals, the availability to play in worship approximately once a month, and basic music reading skills are necessary. Learning and practicing bell-playing techniques is part of this ensemble and not a prerequisite. The group is open to all high schoolers and adults. Contact Sally Molyneux to learn more.
Binkley Bells rehearses each Thursday from 5:30 – 6:30 PM in the Sanctuary.
The Old Time Gospel Band
The Old Time Gospel Band is a convivial group of musicians of all ages who have a love of Old Time and Gospel music. The group helps lead in worship approximately once every six to eight weeks. Rehearsals are on Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:15 AM in the Choir Room, and both vocalists and instrumentalists are invited to join the OTGB. Contact Karen Coletti to learn more.
